Week three of the Classroom of the Future Foundation’s (CFF) Career Discovery Cybersecurity Experience is complete. This week students at the Community Day School (CDS) in Sweetwater Union High School District and Health Sciences High & Middle College (HSHMC) learned about the history of communication security, through the lens of the USS Midway Museum.

“In order for students to understand what cybersecurity is, you have to know where it came from.” – Rudy Shappee, Docent, USS Midway Museum

Students and teachers toured the USS Midway Museum on Wednesday, visiting various sites on the ship that were critical to the evolution of communication security. Check it out:

Prior to visiting the USS Midway Museum, students completed a close read and discussion about the various areas of the ship that were dedicated to communication security. Then, on Wednesday, November 8th, students got to tour those five areas. Led by a team of docents (many of whom served on the USS Midway when the ship was active), students learned about military signal/communication security and its connection to today’s cyber industry. Students discovered the use of “red phones,” learned about the secret code techniques used on the ship, got a behind the scenes look at the Surface Operations Center, and went inside an E-2 Hawkeye (know as the “eyes of the fleet”) on the USS Midway flight deck.

“I was awestruck to see how everything was back then.” – Student

“Even though I had been to the USS Midway Museum in 4th grade, it was really fun to come back to the ship and see the Surface Operations Center and learn about it from Docent Todd.” – Student

Next week, students will experience today’s cybersecurity industry, and hear from an employee at a leading cyber company, Cylance.
